King of Fruits

Well . . . or so they say! Durian actually has an interesting texture. On the outside are prickly thorns (which should be a warning!) and it's also where it gets the name from. Duri means thorn. On the inside are huge seeds which are enveloped by the mushy edible part. It is quite messy to eat as seen below. Just grab a piece and dig in! It leaves quite the aftertaste (it lingers).

The funniest part about the whole story is that we had just talked with A and S the night before about we haven't had to eat it here yet. We had only tried a little bite in the States before leaving (actually that one had been imported and wasn't nearly as strong in taste!). The next morning our neighbors invite us to go with them to this free durian eating exhibition. We couldn't resist :)

We had even talked that very morning before our invitation about how we knew our time would come where we would at least have to give it a try. Well, now at least we can say we've had it here and we can handle it. Now, that doesn't mean we will rush out to the store and buy one! We forgot to mention, the smell is usually the worst part :) You know where durian is for sale way before actually seeing it!

At least there was some fun entertainment for the kids, the little girl up front is the daughter of our neighbor. She decided to skip the durian eating and get a balloon flower made! Smart choice :)

Daniela... c'mon...what a wussy bite! HA! You're supposed to put the WHOLE piece in your mouth then spit out the seed after you've sucked all the delicious fruit off...HAHAHAHAHAHA!
And you're right, the smell IS the worst part, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that there is a 'best' part of durian...
You need to do a post next about the AMAZING Queen of Fruits...which actually tastes wonderful and doesn't leave you with clogged arteries and nasty smelling burps!
I'm SO proud of yall for eating it!
